Calderón Theatre
Calderón Theatre which belongs to the National Network of Theaters, is one of the most prestigious cultural spaces in Castilla and León and one of the best theaters in Spain.
It opened its doors in September 1864 with the performance of Calderón de la Barca 'El Alcalde de Zalamea'. Planned by the architect Jerónimo de la Gándara - the same one who designed Lope de Vega Theatre–,Calderón theatre presents a neoclassical design. Its majestic facade anticipates an interior no less imposing.
After an ambitious refurbishment Calderón theatre reopened in 1999. It hosted the II International Congress of the Spanish Language opened by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain and attended by six Heads of State. The most prestigious theater and dance companies have performed in its stage such as the National Dance Company, Teatro de la Abadía , the National Drama Center and Russian and Cuban National Ballets.
Its main room, with more than a thousand seats (20 of them for people with disabilities), has a large stage of more than 400 square meters. It is one of the most sumptuous rooms in the country, topped by a huge central lamp made in the Royal Glass Factory with more than 30,000 pieces of glass that make the piece exceed the ton of weight.
Children’s programming is divided between Sala Delibes and The loft. In this reference center develops an artistic residency the company Teloncillo Teatro, National Award of Performing Arts for Children and Youth. It also develops programs for young people such as La Nave or Meet You Valladolid, and for the elderly, such as La Nave senior.
It also highlights the 'Salón de los espejos', a space as attractive as versatile, where cultural events, exhibitions, gala dinners, company meals, advertising promotions, conferences or awards ceremonies are held.
It is the permanent venue of the Valladolid International Film Festival (SEMINCI). It also hosts the Teveo National Meetings of Performing Arts for Children and Youth, the Tempo Classic music cycle or the World Golden Oracle Magic Awards.
