Land of wine
The renowned quality of Valladolid wines is only comparable to their variety. In the province, the Designations of Origin Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Cigales, Toro, and León converge. Three wineries hold the highest recognition in this field awarded in Europe, Denomination of Origin Vino de Pago (Vizar, Abadía de Retuerta, and Heredad de Urueña), and the Protected Geographical Indication Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León.
All of this, combined with the diversity of its landscapes and winemaking traditions, the history and heritage of the capital and the towns, their walls, castles, and fortresses, makes Valladolid a wine tourism paradise. If you are a devotee of fine wine, a visit to one of the wineries in the province is a must, all within a short distance from the city, allowing you to organize your visit with the capital as the center of your trip.
Its status as a national benchmark in the world of wine was definitively consolidated in 2017 when Valladolid hosted the Brussels World Wine Contest, the most important international competition in the field.
Each year, the city and the province come together for the event 'Valladolid, Plaza Mayor del Vino', which brings together denominations of the area in the center of the capital. For three days, visitors can taste all kinds of wines without leaving the city center.
Tapas are one of the most well-known culinary attractions of the city. Going 'out for tapas' in Valladolid, a tradition ingrained among the locals, is a first-class culinary experience. Around this bite-sized delight, the National Pinchos and Tapas Competition, the World Tapas Championship (both held in November at the Cúpula del Milenio), the Provincial Pinchos Competition (in June), and the Day Fair (in September) are celebrated.
For those who prefer to sit down at the table, an impeccable selection of roasted or grilled lamb awaits. Accompany it with the famous Pan (bread) de Valladolid, a protected regional food, and other traditional dishes such as Tudela del Duero asparagus, Zaratán sausage, or Villalón cheese.
